The schedule below outlines a typical day for me, Jess Poracky BC MBA '18, during my first semester. Through this post, I hope to convey what a day in the life of a BC MBA student is like and also answer any questions you may have about the beginning of this experience.
During my first semester, I was challenged on many levels—adjusting to being a student again, taking classes in new and unfamiliar subjects, meeting new people, and evaluating my professional goals and path. Now, I proudly look back on what my classmates and I accomplished over the past semester. Our enthusiasm, support for each other, hard work, and creative time management made the first semester a time of “focused fun” both inside and outside the classroom.
6:30 a.m. Wake up and get ready for the day. My 15-minute commute to campus is very easy and reliable; I take the green line to the Boston College T-stop. A lot of my classmates live close by, and especially on early morning class days, it’s great to have a train buddy!
8:00 - 8:45 a.m. Arrive on campus and meet with my career advisor. I try to meet with my advisor once every couple of weeks. During these sessions, we practice different strategies for informational, behavioral, and case interviews.
8:45 - 10:45 a.m. Prepare for class case discussions in Fulton Honors Library and get a head start on the next day’s homework.
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Data Analytics 1 Core Course. In this class, we learned how to conduct and interpret various types of data analyses and how to build computer models to answer company case problems. Our professor was hilarious, he often sprinkled funny cat memes and video parodies throughout the slide decks. One day he spoofed Jimmy Kimmel’s “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets” to “Professors Read Mean Course Evaluations!”
1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Lunch in Fulton Graduate Lounge. Students bring their lunch from home or grab something at one of the several dining options close to Fulton Hall. During the 45-minute break between classes, we enjoy unwinding and catching up with friends!
1:45 - 3:45 p.m. Marketing Core Course. This class covered the fundamentals of marketing which we then applied to our engaging case discussions. During these case discussions, the professor challenged us to think both critically and strategically. One of my favorite case analyses examined the role of audience segmentation in the fashion television market. Based on our analysis of network rating scores, cost per impressions, viewership, and programming expense, we determined that a narrow segmentation approach would result in the highest profit for the network.
4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Meet with Net Impact Boards Fellow group. Each year, Net Impact, a graduate student club, organizes the Board Fellows program, where selected students participate in a volunteer consulting project with a local non-profit. My team is crafting a social media strategy to increase volunteer participation and donations for our client’s millennial target audience group.
5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Attend an on-campus corporate presentation. As a BC MBA student, I have access to numerous resources offered by the Career Development department. About twice a week, companies from all different types of industries come to campus and discuss job/internship opportunities. After the presentation, I can network with the presenters, who are often BC alumni, to learn more about the company culture, industry, and opportunities. During the fall, I attended several different corporate presentations including Amazon, Liberty Mutual, Ocean Spray, and Pfizer.
6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Go to the BC Recreational Center or go on a run around the picturesque reservoir close to campus. Every couple of weeks, a group of us gets together to play basketball—sometimes there is some friendly competition between Section 1 and Section 2!
7:30 - 11:00 p.m. When I arrive home from campus, I eat dinner and finish any remaining readings and problem sets for the next day. I try to allocate at least an hour each night towards researching summer internship opportunities. Since classes meet from Monday to Thursday, I spend my Friday's applying to summer internship opportunities identified throughout the week.
